Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: The Title

Perhaps in hopes of reinventing an already well-known, well-loved, and arguably played-out series, the new tokusatsu adaptation, as well as the renewal manga release, adopted a new but non-literal official English title: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon.

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon's former "official" (at least the closest thing to it) English title had been Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon. This title can be found on various products, including the Sailor Moon manga artbooks, as well as several Sailor Moon card series. Although the original interpretation, this translation is also not truly literal. "Bishoujo" means "Pretty Young Girl" (bi=pretty/beautiful, shoujo=young girl), but was shortened to just Pretty in the title. Senshi, as all Sailor Moon fans know, translates to soldier or warrior.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon is an even more liberal interpretation of the title, but gives the series a different feel and conotation. Guardian and Soldier are words representing two very different things, although those two things overlap. The title sets the mood for the new series; re-telling the story of Princess Serenity and her beloved and dedicated guardians.
