Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon // Basic Information

After constant rumors of a new Sailor Moon anime series, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon was officially announced in June 2003 by the series creator, Naoko Takeuchi. Although an anime version was expected for the newest installment of Sailor Moon, PGSM was announced to be a tokusatsu series with sentai elements. The story of the Sailor Team had come full circle; initially inspired by sentai, and now becoming a sentai show itself.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon initially appeared on TV Asahi on September 27, 2003, prior to the actual series premier. A making-of special, entitled "Make Up! Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon" aired on this date and contained behind-the-scenes footage for the upcoming TV show. It ran 30 minutes in total.

October 4, 2003 marked the true premier of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon on Japanese television. It was scheduled in the tough Saturday morning 7:30-8:00 AM timeslot. The series, a re-telling of the Dark Kingdom story arc, wound up consisting of 49 televised Acts in total, all of which were released on DVD.

During PGSM's run, several other promotional and special events were held. DJ Moon, a radio program, aired several times on Japanese radio, which was eventually sold as a CD. A stage musical was held for fans, called Kirari Super Live, which was later released on DVD. The PGSM actors made various other appearances to promote Sailor Moon's newest incarnation.

After the series concluded its run on TV, two direct-to-video continuations of the story were released on DVD. These included Act 0, the story of Sailor V, and the Special Act, which documented the wedding of Usagi and Mamoru. Act 0 also included two short side stories archiving the Birth of Tuxedo Mask as well as what happened to Hina, a newly created character for the series.Super Dance Lesson was also released on DVD, although only through magazines. This DVD showcased PGSM's actresses teaching dance routines that appeared in Kirari Super Live.

Coinciding with the debut of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, the Sailor Moon manga was revised and re-released. It now shared the title of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon with the TV series, and featured but was not limited to changes to the artwork. This new deluxe release of the Sailor Moon manga not only celebrated the franchise's incredible history, but also served as a promotional tool for Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon.

Like the Sailor Moon musicals, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon was never licensed for adaptation or sale in any other countries, much to the disappointment of fans worldwide. It did not, however, stop Sailor Moon fans from viewing the newest version of their beloved fighter for justice.
