Series Overview
Sailor Moon Sailor Stars was the fifth and final series of Sailor Moon. It debuted on March 9, 1996 and concluded on February 8, 1997. Its run included episodes 167-200, and no special episodes or movies were produced. The title, Sailor Stars, probably refers to the Star Seeds or Sailor Starlights featured in this series, but it is often shortened to just "Stars" by Sailor Moon fans. There are two versions of the opening, both set to "Sailor Star Song" and three different closings used. The first two are set to two different versions of "Kora mo, Sora mo, Kitto" (first version appears during the Nehellenia episodes) and use the same animation while the third version is set to the Moon Lips version of "Moonlight Densetsu" and is a special animation used in the final episode.

This series is broken into two parts. The first six episodes of Sailor Stars deal with Queen Nehellenia's revival and her attacks on Usagi and friends. After Nehellenia's redemption, it is revealed that she was revived by a new enemy: Sailor Galaxia. The remainder of the series chronicles the Sailor Team's struggle to protect the Earth from its greatest threat yet.

Sailor Stars marked the return of the soldiers of the Outer Sailor System, including the elusive Sailor Saturn who was not included in the SuperS specials in which her comrades appeared. It also marked the introduction of an entirely new sailor team, the Sailor Starlights, heralding from a distant part of the galaxy. Despite or perhaps because of these huge plot points, and this series' thematic differences, it is often regarded as the best series of the show.

Like the Heart Crystals of S and Dream Mirrors of SuperS, Sailor Stars includes special metaphysical objects that are being inspected by the series' villains. These objects are "Star Seeds" and every living being has one. They are bright spheres contained within hexagonal transparent crystals that emerge from the head or chest of the human. A normal human's Star Seed's light quickly burns out, but that of a Sailor Soldier, a "True" Star Seed, shines eternally. Gathering these True Star Seeds is the goal of Sailor Galaxia and her Animamates.

Series Summary
Queen Nehellenia makes her final stand in the first six episodes of Sailor Stars, reappearing after her defeat in Sailor Moon SuperS. In episode one of Sailor Stars, and the fan-named "Nehellenia Arc", a disembodied voice coaxes the Queen out of her slumber, and convinces her to break the seal she placed on herself. Queen Nehellenia's rage has only increased since her former appearance, and her sole desire is to bring suffering to those of the White moon, focusing primarily on enacting her revenge upon Serenity/Usagi. She was scorned by them once, and cannot forgive the Sailor Team.

Nehellenia is swift, deft, and crueler than ever before. She is completely consumed by her hatred of Serenity and is torturous in her methods of making the Princess suffer, going so far as manipulating Mamoru and making him hers. The Queen's srategies prove to be very successful, and she is able to capture all the sailor guardians in mirrors and completely obliterate Chibi-Usa's existence through her control of Mamoru. The newly upgraded Eternal Sailor Moon is eventually able to release Nehellenia from her own vices and sadness, effectively healing her.

The remaining episodes of Sailor Stars showcase the coming of several new characters, and the exit of Mamoru and Chibi-Usa just as Sailor Galaxia and her Sailor Animamates begin capturing the star seeds of people. Chibi Chibi, a mysterious toddler appears, and no one knows who she is or where she came from. The Three Lights, an insanely popular singing group, suddenly start attending Usagi's high school. The three begin fostering an unusual relationship with Usagi and friends, just as three new sailor soldiers appear, the Sailor Starlights. The Sailor Starlights waver between the boundaries of allies and enemies for the Sailor Team, and even though Sailor Moon wants them to join together, everyone else insists otherwise.

Each of Sailor Galaxia's Animamates are eventually defeated, and Princess Kakyuu, whom the Starlights have been searching for so desparately since their homeworld was destroyed, finally appears. However, her presence doesn't last long and her star seed is quickly stolen by Sailor Galaxia.

The Shadow Galactica's headquarters are discovered when the entire city is under attack. Galaxia takes everyone's star seeds, so the Sailor Team goes to the final battle, unsure of its consequences. During this final battle, Usagi learns that Mamoru's star seed was taken on his way to America, and he is dead. Further more, the Sailor Team's star seeds are taken, one by one. Eternal Sailor Moon, the Sailor Starlights, and Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon face off against Galaxia, but Sailor Moon is brutally attacked and unable to continue fighting. Chibi Chibi finally reveals her identity as the star seed of Sailor Galaxia, the promised Light of Hope. CHibi Chibi transforms into a sword and Usagi becomes Princess Serenity. Serenity refuses to fight, however, but Galaxia's body becomes completely overtaken by Chaos, the entity that Galaxia sealed into herself ages ago. Serenity reaches out to the good Galaxia deep within Chaos, and the evil is dispelled.
