Item Information: Transformation Pen (Anime)

Sailor Mercury's transformation pen first appeared in episode 8, "Tensai Shoujo wa Youma nano? Kyoufu no Sennoujuku", of the anime. When Ami Mizuno was being threatened by the youma Garoben, the planetary symbol of Mercury appeared on her forehead. Luna saw this, and magically summoned Mercury's transformation pen. This pen is one of the few items in the anime series that is diguised as an ordinary object.
Sailor Mercury's Transformation Pen, as pictured, resembles an ordinary pen. It is blue in color and has a golden cap, adorned with the symbol of Mercury. It is essentially identical to the other Four Guardian's transformation pens, its only difference being its Mercury-specific coloring and marking.
After the final battle with the Dark Kingdom (episode 46), Ami does not remember her past as Sailor Mercury. It isn't until episode 48 that she does remember, and her Transformation Pen is returned to her.
The Transformation Pen is used until episode 62, "Senshi no yuujou! Sayonara Ami-chan" in Sailor Moon R, when it is replaced by the more powerful Mercury Star Power Stick.
The Transformation Pen is activated with the phrase "Mercury Power, Make Up!" and allows Ami to transform into Sailor Mercury. Without this transformation pen, it would be impossible for Ami to transform into Sailor Mercury.
In addition to its transmutating abilities, the Transformation Pen is also a way for Mercury to call power. In episode 44, "Usagi no kakusei! Choukako no message", Mercury along with her comrades invoked her power to form a protective barrier around Sailor Moon to shield her from Kunzite's attack.
Also, in episode 10 "Norowareta Bus! Honou no Senshi Mars Toujou", Ami (not transformed) held her Transformation Pen and wished upon it that her friends would be safe. The pen's power was then able to guide Moon and Mars out of danger.
