Series Overview
The first series of Sailor Moon, often called "classic" by fans, debuted on March 7th, 1992 and concluded February 27th of the following year. It was the longest of the five series, consisting of 46 episodes total. This series had two separate versions of the opening, both set to the song "Moonlight Densetsu" ("Moonlight Legend") and also included two different ending animations, one with "Heart Moving" and the other "Princess Moon." "Classic" Sailor Moon is the only series out of the five to not have a special name, such as in the case of R, S, SuperS, and Sailor Stars.

The first series is more campy than the later story arcs, but it is well-loved by fans not only for its engaging story but for its nostalgic value as well, because it was of course the beginning. It is also regarded as having the worst quality animation of the five series, which is natural since it was the oldest and most frugally produced. The story makes up for this downfall, however.

This story arc's initial success is what solidified Sailor Moon's future, as it was originally intended to conclude at just 46 episodes. Because of the show's explosive popularity, it went on to be renewed for "Sailor Moon R" and the rest is history.

Series Summary
One day crybaby Usagi Tsukino stumbles upon a cat with a crescent moon on its forehead. However, this cat, named Luna, is no ordinary feline; she can talk and tells Usagi of her destiny to fight as the soldier of love and justice, Sailor Moon. It is her mission to protect the world from evil and find the Moon Princess, whom she is sworn to protect.

Usagi's adventures as Sailor Moon pit her against the Dark Kingdom, a group initially trying to steal energy from humans, but later bent on capturing the Illusionary Silver Crystal. The Dark Kingdom's leaders, Queen Beryl and the mysterious Queen Metaria, order The Four Heavenly Kings to terrorize Juuban with their monsters in hopes of discovering the Seven Rainbow Crystals, which make up the Silver Crystal.

Eventually the other four soldiers Sailors Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus join Sailor Moon one by one. Tuxedo Mask also appears, a mysterious man who aids the sailor soldiers in battle. It is later discovered that Tuxedo Mask is actually Mamoru Chiba. His true identity, however, is the Prince of the Earth Endymion, lover of the Moon's Princess Serenity.

Not long after the Sailor Team's assemblage, the true identity of the Moon Princess is revealed to be Usagi herself and the Silver Crystal appears, which Sailor Moon is able to use in battle. Mamoru is then taken and brainwashed by the Dark Kingdom, and begins trying to force the Sailor Team to hand over the Silver Crystal fighting as Dark Prince Endymion. During this time, the Sailor Team learns of their past lives.

During the last stand against the Dark Kingdom, Sailor Moon's four guardian soldiers are killed. She faces off alone with Dark Prince Endymion, who attempts to kill her but eventually remembers his past and dies protecting Sailor Moon. Queen Metaria fuses with Beryl but she is overcome by the power of Princess Serenity's Silver Crystal. Serenity is killed due to the unavoidable consequence of using the crystal's full power. She dies wishing that she and her friends could start over, living normal lives.

Because of the Silver Crystal's ability to grant wishes, Usagi and her friends are reborn as normal girls, but with no memory whatsoever of their past together.
