Profile:

Nephrite is the second of the Shitennou (Four Heavenly Kings) to be shown. While on Earth he uses an alias, Masato Sanjouin, for his disguise as a young millionaire. At first his mission is to gather energy, but he begins to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor Jadeite and is unsuccessful at every attempt. Eventually, Queen Beryl assigns him the task of finding the Maboroshi no Ginzuishou. Zoisite, another member of the Shitennou does not like Nephrite at all and constantly criticizes him for his shortcomings and repeated failures. Nephrite hates Zoisite and does not trust him.

Nephrite is very different than his fellow Shitennou and consults the power of the stars and constellations to help him channel and focus his energy to locate targets. He does this using the Kurozuishou, or Black Crystal, which he creates using the power of stars. Nephrite also has the ability to intensify people's strong feelings, sometimes by manipulating them, and can transform that passion into a youma.

Nephrite also once makes use of his "Shadow" form, called Nephrite no Bunshin, which means Nephrite's Other Self. His shadow form is essentially a shadowy, ghost-like version of himself which he is able to project and use to possess and manipulate innocents. He also faces off with the sailor soldiers while assuming this form.

Another factor that distinguishes Nephrite from his fellow Shitennou members is his utilization of a hideout on Earth. As part of his disguise as millionaire Masato Sanjouin, he lives in a mansion and drives a flashy red sports car. He is very suave and charming, and his wealth also aides him in making the women of Tokyo swoon over him.

Later he becomes involved with Usagi's best friend, Naru and at one time suspects that she could be Sailor Moon. The pair ultimately, and unbelievably, fell in love. Their love turns out to be starcrossed; Nephrite is betrayed and killed by Zoisite's Youma: Grape, Suzuran, and Housenka, and dies in Naru's arms in episode 24. He also discovers Sailor Moon's true identity but is murdered before he can tell anyone else.

Disuises/Alter Egos:

Nephrite utilizes one human alter-ego, that of a young and handsome millionare by the name of Masato Sanjouin. He also dons the appearance of Tuxedo Mask in hopes of drawing out Sailor Moon to capture her, but ends up attracting Naru Oosaka instead. Nephrite's shadow form can also be considered one of his alter-egos.
