Character Information: Princess Kakyuu (Anime)
Princess Kakyuu was the mysterious Princess that the Sailor Starlights were so desperately searching for during the Sailor Stars series. During the Sailor Wars she escaped Galaxia, but did not tell her beloved guardians the Starlights where she was headed. Leaving behind her homeworld, Kinmoku, which was facing certain destruction, was not easy for the Princess, but her keen sense of discipline and patience drove her onward. Kakyuu was aware of the Light of Hope, the one thing that could destroy Galaxia and end her reign of terror. It was her mission, and the reason why she chose the distant Earth, to locate the elusive power.
Princess Kakyuu's time waiting quietly in hiding was spent in utter solitude. She endured this loneliness with the understanding that her knowledge of the Light of Hope, however limited it may have been, was crucial to the success of not only her comrades, but all the galaxy's Sailor Soldiers. She also knew that her life was on the line, as she stood as a great threat to Galaxia.
Kakyuu had a very strong bond with her guadians, especially Sailor Star Fighter. The four of them grew up together on Kinmoku, and they all cared deeply for one another. The nature of Kakyuu and Star Fighter's relationship was unconfirmed, but Fighter's feelings for Kakyuu were at least part of the reason why Kou Seiya fell in love with Usagi.
Kakyuu did not show herself until episode 193, but she still played an important role even before appearing. She was the reason why the Starlights stopped at the rural Earth in the first place, and why they disguised themselves as men and formed their band, the Three Lights. Using the power of their songs, they tried to communicate with Princess Kakyuu, pouring their heartache and desperation into their music. Kakyuu was able to hear their message, but remained in hiding, much to the dismay and confusion of her guardians. When Chibi Chibi discovered an antique incense burner, Kakyuu's presence became noticable to those around her. Strange, ethereal butterflies flit around Usagi and her friends, and the scent of fragrant olive blossoms, that of Princess Kakyuu, could be smelled coming from the incense burner. These clues led to the eventual revealing of the Princess, as she was hiding within the incense burner itself.
After appearing, Kakyuu was reunited with the Sailor Starlights. She told the tale of the Sailor Wars, and a legendary Sailor Soldier who was supposed to have destroyed Chaos, but instead was completely taken over and corrupted by the evil power. Kakyuu tried to unite the Sailor Soldiers of Earth and her Sailor Starlights, emphasizing the pleas already made by Eternal Sailor Moon. She referenced the Sailor Wars, in which Sailor Soldier was pitted against Sailor Soldier, and betrayal and deceit were the problems that led to the destruction of homeworlds and allowed Galaxia in. She feared that if everyone did not band together, their fate would be the same as those long lost Sailor Soldiers.
Princess Kakyuu possessed an incredible amount of power. When she appeared in episode 193, Chbi Chibi (holding the incense burner) and Usagi were both absorbed by a "black hole" Sailor Tin Nyanko set free. Kakyuu was able to completely destroy the black hole from the inside, and retrieve Usagi and her exposed Star Seed, the Ginzuishou. Kakyuu's presence upset Galaxia, because she knew that Kakyuu was trying to awake the Light of Hope. Unlike anyone else, Princess Kakyuu was able to hold off Galaxia's attack, although not for long. The extent of her power was revealed in the Sailor Stars anime album, which stated she had the same power as Serenity.
Kakyuu encouraged the the Three Lights to put on one last concert as a last-ditch effort to use their songs to try and reach and awaken the Light of Hope. Everyone gathered at this concert, and Chibi Chibi did react, although it went unnoticed. It was in this Episode, 195, that Kakyuu was killed by Galaxia. She gave her life to protect the Sailor Starlights from Galaxia's attack. Her dying wish was for the Sailor Starlights to come together, and her last words were "The Light of Hope..."
At the end of the series, when Chaos was defeated and the Star Seeds were returned, Kakyuu reappeared and led the Sailor Starlights back to their planet Kinmoku, to restore their homeworld and start anew.
