The Sailor Team's one sub-group, the Seeraa 4 Senshi, the Four Sailor Soldiers, are guardians to Sailor Moon and her other form, Princess Serenity. Their lives are devoted to the protection of Sailor Moon, and they put themselves on the line for her countless times. Essentially, these Four Soldiers' fundamental purpose is just to protect Sailor Moon. Their devotion and dedication is evident and showcased several times in the show. Sailor Venus acts as the team's leader, but the other three play important roles in the function and success of the team. This sub-group frequently transforms and attacks in unison, sometimes combining attacks to increase their power.
In the distant past, the Four Sailor Soldiers lived on the Moon with the White Moon Princess and Queen Serenity. They were in fact princesses of their own respective planets but acted as Princess Serenity's primary defenders, thus earning the title of Four Sailor Soldiers. When Queen Metaria and the people of the Earth attacked the Silver Millennium, the Four Sailor Soldiers were struck down and killed while protecting the palace and Royal Family.
Forms and Power-Ups
This Team has three forms throughout the show. These include their first, unnamed form, Star, and Crystal/Super. Their first and weakest is used throughout the first series. In the beginning of Sailor Moon R, when the Sailor Soldiers have forgotten the events of the battle with the Dark Kingdom, they regain their memory together to help Sailor Moon fight, continuing to use their first forms.
The Soldiers receive power-ups but not new forms between episodes 52 and 55, where each Soldier gets her own episode showcasing her power-up and consequent new attack; Venus powers-up in 52 using Crescent Beam Shower, Mercury in 53 with Sabao Spray Freezing, Mars in 54 with Fire Soul Bird, and finally Jupiter in 55 with Supreme Thunder Dragon.
In episode 62, they are given the Star Power Sticks by Luna and Artemis to upgrade the soldiers to Star Power status. These transformations do not appear until later, however, with the soldiers getting special episodes dedicated to their new forms. Mercury's Star Transformation appears in Episode 62, where she performs Shine Aqua Illusion. Mars Star transforms in episode 63, attacking with Burning Mandala. Jupiter and Venus Star transform in episode 65, and perform Sparkling Wide Pressure and Venus Love Me Chain respectively. The Star form is used throughout the remainder of R, through S, and into SuperS.
The Four Soldiers are upgraded to their final and most powerful form, Crystal, simultaneously when they accept Pegasus' power in SuperS, episode 143. It is at this time that they reach the status of Super Sailors. Just as in the case with the Star power-up, the Soldiers' transformations and new attacks do not appear until after their initial upgrade. Mercury transforms and performs Mercury Aqua Rhapsody in 151. Mars comes next in 152 with Mars Flame Sniper. Jupiter and Venus once again share an episode, showcasing Jupiter Oak Evolution and Venus Love and Beauty Shock respectively.
Counter Parts
Throughout the series, each of the Four Soldiers have strong connections to some of their enemies, some of which can be classified as their counterparts. The connection is stronger in some cases than others, but it is still there. These counterparts are seen in the Shitennou, the Ayakashi Sisters, the Witches 5 of the Death Busters, and the Amazoness Quartet. Mercury is counterpart to: Kunzite, Berthier, Viluy, and Palla Palla. Mars: Jadeite, Kooan, Eudial, and Ves Ves. Jupiter: Zoisite, Petz, Tellu, and Jun Jun. Venus: Nephrite, Calvares, Mimete, and Cere Cere. In all cases excluding the Shitennou, the connection lies in element used, personality, and group position (leader, etc.).
Death and Rebirth
This team is without question self-sacrificing. They are valiant warriors but have suffered greatly, and sometimes that suffering ended in death for the Four Soldiers. Thanks to the Ginzuishou, however, the team is always reborn, ready to protect their Princess.
In the final showdown against the present's Dark Kingdom, the Four Sailor Soldiers are killed one by one, each dying to protect Sailor Moon from the DD Girls. Later, their spirits reappear to aid Princess Serenity in defeating Metaria by combining their energy. It is Usagi's wish, granted by the Ginzuishou, that brings her friends back to life after Metaria's defeat.
In Sailor Stars, the soldiers are once again killed when they sacrifice their lives by taking Galaxia's attack. Mercury, Jupiter and Venus protect Maker, Healer, and Fighter respectively, and Mars shields Sailor Moon. When the Starlights are shocked that they would give up their lives for them, the Four Sailor Soldiers explain they did it to protect people who are important to them, and that Sailor Moon and the Starlights are precious. The Soldiers are reborn for their third and final time in the series after their Star Seeds are released.
