Book Overview
This book is the first of eight Anime Albums that Kodansha would release for Sailor Moon. The original series and S were the only two season that had two corresponding books released each. These books are amazing resources of information that is not found anywhere else. They cover the episodes and characters of each season as well as offer supplemental information like character designs and cast and crew interviews. There were none released for SuperS or Sailor Stars, unfortunately.
Book Contents
The first of the Sailor Moon Nakayoshi Anime Albums was released on April 10th, 1994. Like all the albums, it contains a pull out poster in the front of the book. It is a cute picture of Usagi, Ami, Rei, Makoto, Minako, Luna, and Artemis in front of a shop and was drawn by Kazuko Tadano, the character designer for the first two series of Sailor Moon. It is a singled-sided poster, unlike the posters in the other albums.
This book is pretty unique due to the fact it has quite a bit of images of the manga in it, containing a Naoko Takeuchi's World section right in the beginning of the book! This section includes the manga character designs for Usagi, Ami, Rei, Makoto, Minako, Luna, Artemis, Mamoru, Motoki, Reika, Queen Beryl, Jadeite, Naru, Naru's mother, Gurio Umino, Kuri, Yumiko, Ikuko Tsukino, Kenji Tsukino, Shingo Tsukino, and Mika. It also has a small section about Diana! Originally Naoko planned Usagi's advisor to be a "Moon Fairy," but later scrapped this idea in favor of Luna. Obviously, Diana appears later in the series as Luna and Artemis' offspring.
The book covers the first 24 episodes of the series, with guides for each episode including synopses and pictures. It also contains a one page spread for the first opening; along with a three page character spreads for Usagi, Ami, Rei, and Makoto (despite the fact the book doesn't cover episode 25 and on, when Makoto was introduced). There is also one page all about Sailor V, which names her as Minako Aino and has a picture of Sailor Venus. Again, like Makoto's page, this is rather curious since she had yet to appear in the series in what this book covers. The character spreads have multiple stills from each of their attacks and transformations, except for Sailor Venus. The last color page in the book is about Usagi's narrative introduction that appears before each episode and the first ending, Heart Moving.
The black and white pages of the book offer quite a bit of information, including an interview with Naoko Takeuchi and Kazuko Tadano. Also included are the anime character designs, commentary from the main voice cast, a section of fanart submitted by young fans, and finally, a page dealing with some of the merchandise and toys released for the series.
